Clipper Yacht Race, Greencastle, Ireland, 24th July 2022. Start of the final leg of the Clipper Yacht Race between Greencastle, Ireland and London, England. After sailing over 40000 nautical miles around the globe, the Clipper Race fleet, crewed by non-professional sailors from all walks of life, has departed Derry-Londonderry, NI for one final race. The Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race was halted by the pandemic in March 2020, halfway into its route but restarted earlier this year. The event is the only of its kind which trains everyday people to cross oceans and will finish in London’s Royal Docks this weekend (30 July). Pictured is the Punta del Este team, skippered by Spaniard Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez, leading the fleet as it commenced the final and fifteenth race of the circumnavigation.   Under stormy skies, the Clipper Race fleet started its final race from Greencastle, Ireland and the crew are now on a 860 nautical mile sprint around the top of Scotland, through the notorious Pentland Firth and into the North Sea, heading to the finish line off the mouth of the River Thames.  On the event’s global route, the teams, made up of professions such a teacher, dentist, accountant, hairdresser and farmer, have faced waves of up to 14 foot in the North Pacific Ocean, wind speeds of over 50 knots and experienced freezing temperatures and searing heat.
